Why does the Nivella Health case matter?
Most research case studies feature a sponsor running a single market research study. Nivella Health’s story is different: a Clinical Research Organization (CRO) and Site Management Organization (SMO) in Kigali, Rwanda, using AI-moderated interviews over six months to compete for sponsor work with larger CROs in the US and Europe.
The case shows that AI-moderated research can sit inside a regulated business when the compliance posture supports it.
Who is Nivella Health?
Nivella runs Phase I–III trials for biotech, pharmaceutical and CRO sponsors. Its national regulator, the Rwanda FDA, holds WHO Maturity Level 3; as of December 2024 it was one of eight African regulators at that level (Rwanda FDA). According to nivella.com, Nivella offers:
- A regulatory approval timeline of about two months
- A pre-screened participant database of more than 150,000 people
Nivella describes its trial delivery as GCP-compliant.
Nivella’s challenge
Nivella competes with larger CROs in the US and Europe for sponsor work. It wanted to hear from trial participants quickly and at scale, on what drew them to enroll, what held them back and what made them think about leaving, with a compliance posture its sponsors would accept.
How Nivella used Carevoices
Over six months, Nivella ran 1,203 AI-moderated voice and video interviews and built the findings into its own trial workflow:
- Recruitment-stage interviews on enrollment motivators and barriers
- Retention interviews on why participants stayed or thought about leaving
- Findings shared with its site teams, so they could act on them
- De-identified deliverables, with every transcript de-identified to the HIPAA Safe Harbor standard under a BAA
What Nivella reports
- 48 hours per study, on average, from study brief to delivered, de-identified transcripts
- 50% faster enrollment, drawing on a 150,000+ participant database. Nivella says what it learned changed its recruitment messaging, screening criteria and participant-facing materials.
- ≥90% participant retention
Nivella’s CEO describes the engagement in his own words in the Nivella Health case study.
Why did it work for Nivella?
1. Voice and video fit participants’ schedules. Remote interviews fit around clinic visits, with no travel to a research facility.
2. A short turnaround kept findings useful. Results that arrive in days can still change recruitment materials while a trial is enrolling.
3. The compliance posture suited sponsor work. Carevoices is HIPAA-enabled, with a BAA available; every deliverable is de-identified to the HIPAA Safe Harbor standard; and data stays in the US.
What it means for pharma and biotech insights teams
Nivella’s needs, speed that keeps up with decisions and a compliance posture reviewers accept, are the same ones pharma, biotech and medtech insights teams bring to research with healthcare professionals. Carevoices runs AI-moderated interviews with verified physicians, NPs, PAs, pharmacists and nurses, sponsor-blinded by default and with every transcript screened for adverse events.
Start with a pilot study, then scale with an annual plan. Carevoices returns a proposal within 24 hours of your brief, and results in 1–2 weeks from plan approval. See how it works, or start on the pricing page.
